PLANNING: Analysis of 3 Music Videos That Have Influenced Our Final Planning Decisions

1. James Morrison – I Won’t Let You Go

We liked the idea of our artist lying on the floor with a guy as it articulates unity and closeness, and considering the fact that our chosen song is about love I think that unity and closeness is something we should definitely depict in our music video. From 2:55 to 2:59 it shows the artist (James Morrison) lying next to a girl and it communicates a sense of intimacy between the two. I liked how the girl lying on floor is shown in a bird’s eye view, so when we film the part where our artist and the guy are lying on the floor I think we should show them in a bird’s eye view. I like to use of slow motion that is employed throughout the video; I would like to use this idea in our music video too.

2.Ellie Goulding – Your Song

The idea of our artist being in forestry surroundings appealed to us; primarily because nature is something that enforces love to some extent which is something we need to implement. In this music video the artist (Ellie Goulding) is mainly wearing warm, autumn colours which is something we would like to include in our music video. I also like the use of the many close ups as it displays her emotions; this is something I think we should adapt for our music video. And I am also partial to the effect of the camera going in and out of focus, like from 1:00 to 1:04, it is attention-grabbing and is something that will be good to incorporate into our video.

3.Avril Lavigne – When You’re Gone

I really like the idea of holding the camera by hand to deliberately make it look handheld when we have a close up of our artist singing, which is an idea I got from this music video and is shown from 1:03 to 1:06. In the video, from 3:35 to 3:39, it shows a girl carving the initials of her and her boyfriend on a tree and then resting on the tree; although this idea may seem really cliché I like it as it depicts love which is what our chosen song is about. We also decided to make our artist wear a dress while she is singing in a forestry surrounding, like the artist in this video (Avril Lavigne) is wearing as it connotes freedom and devotion to some extent.
