This song was written by Lady Gaga and Rodney Jerkins. The single sold 7.4 million copies worldwide in 2010 and it was nominated a Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals in 2011.
"Inspired by her fear of not being able to enjoy herself because of her dedication to her career, Gaga explained that the lyrics portray herself preferring the dance floor instead of answering her lover's phone call and noted that the telephone addressed in the lyrics of the song is a person telling her to continue working harder."
At the moment, out of all the artists, Lady Gaga is definitely one of the most controversial when it comes to performances and music videos. However, from what I gather, the most controversial videos do have the most viewings on YouTube, and although many are not fans of her work, she is very different to many artists around. Most of her music videos really present her wacky and crazy ideas and establish her image. She also does a lot of promoting, in her 'Telephone' with Beyonce, she promotes many different brands.
Here are some of them:
1:34- Hearbeats earphones2:06- Virgin Mobile
2:17- Diet Coke
4:24- HP Envy 'Beats Limited Edition' laptop from Monster
4:28- Plenty of Fish dating site
4:44- Chevrolet
6:24-Wonderbread
6:36-Miracle Whip
I really like the colors and the exaggeration in the video. Its hard to notice small details like intertextuality, brand promoting or edits. The way they include lots of products like Diet Coke cans which you can see on her hair is quite clever. Also the small transitions, a good example being the telephone at 3:17, which keeps with the theme of the song. As Gaga mentions, the video is about her being more worried about working hard than her picking up a phone call from her lover.
And although this goes against Andrew Goodwin's theory of not having a narrative, I think the video works quite well for the song, it is described as a short film (as it lasts about 9 minutes).
Intertextuality:
The poisons are from Star Wars, : Fex-M3 is from the Star Wars extended universe, Meta-cyanide is from Dune, and Tiberium is from Command and Conquer.
The diner is the same one used in NCIS
