Research: Analysis of student work

One of our first tasks during our first lesson on ancillary products was to look and briefly analyse previous student work. I looked at two completely different pieces, one of which could fit into the genre of our artist.

This piece of work is quite good, it was in my opinion definitely one of the most successful from the ones we looked at. There are a few mistakes but overall it is a good product, and something along the lines of what I look to produce. Here are a few things I spotted while analysing the product:

  • Nice photo on poster and front of album (the same) but a little blurry
  • CD looks a little bland
  • Name of artist should be bigger than album name on CD (unless artist is very well know)
  • Outside image doesn't look too professional
  • Copyright and Industry logo and other key info are on back
  • Advert includes date of release, website and logos
  • Advert should say Out Now or Available to inform people better
  • I would prefer a stronger font on CD front
  • White strip on advert makes it look like the front of a book

I would probably have to be more critical about this one. It seems to me like it is a government campaign or company poster than an artists album cover and advert. Here are a few things I saw when analyzing this product:

  • Digipak looks dark and doesn't advertise the artist
  • Plants on digipak are barely noticeable
  • 'Grace' (artist name) appears as if it is a company logo
  • Lines from the top front to the bottom back (of digipak) represents journey nicely
  • Copyright and Industry logo and other key info are on back
  • One color runs across the digipak (+)
  • No image of artist to advertise or identify them
  • 'OUT NOW' in large and bold informs well
  • And available from (+ logos of  stores) informs customers and makes it easier for them
  • Sticks to the three color guideline (red, grey, white)
