Research: Purpose of Ancillary Products

During our first lesson after the music video deadline we began with our ancillary products. We looked at what they are and why they are used, and the do's and dont's when producing them (using examples of previous student work as a base to figure out what works and what doesn't).

Why are CD covers still used?
The CD, the songs, the music videos, the adverts, they are all part of promoting and selling the artist. When you walk around a shop you don't look at every single artist and album, you do a quick browse without going into particular detail, it is usually the CD cover that attracts you to it, and in some cases if you don't know the name of the artist it is the CD cover that will help you find it.

How helpful are promotional ancillary products for...
... the artist? To sell and promote their image using various platforms.
... the music industry? By selling the artist the industry makes more money. They also need to encourage the use of album covers and visual products as the trend of downloading is driving some people away from actually purchasing the CD.
... the music video? Their is usually a link between the video and the ancillary products so the consumers can relate the artist with all its products.
